Speaker: Joseph Rogers, MD

Dr. Rogers is the Director of The Texas Heart Institute at Baylor College of Medicine and Willerson-O’Quinn Endowed Chair. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and attended medical school at the University of Nebraska. He performed his Internal Medicine residency at Nebraska prior to research and clinical cardiology training at Washington University in St. Louis. Following his fellowship, he remained on faculty at Washington University for 10 years prior to moving to Duke in 2004 and the Texas Heart Institute in 2021. In November 2024, The Texas Heart Institute at Baylor College of Medicine was created through a strategic and operational affiliation between Texas Heart and Baylor. Dr. Rogers is the inaugural director of the Center.

Dr. Rogers’ clinical practice and research initiatives are focused on advanced heart failure. He served as the medical director of the cardiac transplant and mechanical circulatory support programs at Washington University and Duke. His research interests are focused on the clinical application of mechanical circulatory support devices, heart transplantation, and palliative care in advanced heart failure.

He has authored more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals including Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Journal of the American College of Cardiology Heart Failure, New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation and the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation. In addition, he has written 28 book chapters and served as a co-editor of the 2nd edition of the Braunwald supplement on mechanically assisted circulation.

Dr. Rogers served as an associate editor of the American Heart Journal and a deputy editor of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology Heart Failure from 2012-2022. He is currently the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplant.

Dr. Rogers is a past president of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and was Chair of the UNOS Thoracic Committee during the 2018 modification to US heart allocation policy.
