His award-winning teaching engages students in a conversation that relates classical concepts and theories to current events and modern politics.

Additional Information
While teaching is his priority, Dr. Hammons remains active in the discipline of political science. His research interests include constitutional design and federalism with an ongoing collection and analysis of data related to American state constitutions. The results of this effort have been presented at several conferences, and are published in the prestigious American Political Science Review. He is co-editor of a book about state constitutions with Dr. George Connor of 

Southwest Missouri State University . The book was published by the University of Missouri Press in 2008.

Dr. Hammons is also a Senior Research Fellow for the Texas Public Policy Foundation. He writes about education policy and has conducted research on school choice, remedial education, special education, and home-schooling. In addition to his work with TPPF, he has conducted research for organizations such as the 

Milton and Rose Friedman Foundation, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, the Alabama Policy Institute, the John Locke Foundation, the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation, the Progressive Policy Institute, and the Harvard University Program on Education Policy and Governance. His research has been cited in numerous newspapers as well as on radio programs. His 2000 study on special education (co-authored with Dr. Matthew Ladner) was presented in testimony to the United States Congress. His 2002 work for TPPF was presented to the Texas State Board of Education and was the subject of an NBC Nightly News special segment. His 2005 work on remedial education was presented before a briefing session of state legislators.

Dr. Hammons serves on numerous committees and was the President of the Faculty Assembly in 2002-03. He was honored by the University in 2003 with the Opal Goolsby Outstanding Teaching Award, and was a nominee for the Minnie Piper Scholar Award in 2007.
