Speaker: Lan Bentsen 

Topic: What Do You Have to Lose? (Houston's Million Pound Health Challenge)

Shape Up Houston is a civic entrepreneurship of Lan Bentsen. Lan has retired from the for-profit world to pursue community involvement, full time.

He has a thirty-five year history of civic involvement in the health and education issues of at-risk children at the local, state, and national levels. Lan has a distinguished and proven history of effecting positive and measurable change on some of our community and state’s most pressing issues.

His focus on childhood obesity began during his recent tenure as Chairman of the Advisory Board of the University of Texas School of Public Health. He also serves on the University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHealth) Development Board.

Lan is the current chairman of the Advisory Board of the Children’s Defense Fund of Texas, the current Vice-Chair of the national Children’s Defense Fund, where he has been deeply involved in the restoration of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

He is a past Trustee of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. As chairman of the Gulf Coast Chapter of the March of Dimes and as a member of the American Leadership Forum (Houston Class 3), he was deeply involved in the significant reduction of infant mortality in

Houstonand in Texas. In the course of that initiative he also served as a member of the Governor’s Select Committee for Medicaid and Family Services.

Lan is a Harvard MBA with an entrepreneurial career in national real estate and international oil and gas. He has served on the boards of four publicly traded companies, and has served as the Honorary Counsel for the Republic of Georgia.
